G Hotel — First Private Organisation to Support the Penang Stray Rescue Society

April 6, 2018 Responsible Tourism No Comments Email Email

Led by Mr Michael Hanratty, the General Manager of G Hotel with support from staff volunteers, G Hotel is the first private organisation to further the efforts of the Penang Stray Rescue Society (PGSR) in fund-raising and creating awareness for pet ownership responsibility, through a donation drive and visit to the PGSR shelter in Teluk Bahang.

16 staff volunteers of G Hotel Gurney and G Hotel Kelawai were welcomed by Ms Sandy Lim, the founder of PGSR upon arrival at the shelter. Then, Ms Sandy Lim took the team on a house tour of the facilities and shared about how the shelter animals are cared for. Volunteers were touched by the rescue activities at PGSR.

All attendees were given a dog to walk and care for, before going on a short walk and pet bonding time. Being an animal lover, Mr Michael Hanratty enjoyed walking and playing with the dogs, as much as most of the team. After the walk, some volunteers swiftly cooperated with Ms Sandy Lim and her staff to shower the dogs. With love, our volunteers gently sponged the dogs down with soap water, while others stood on standby with towels to dry it. After pampering the dogs, each volunteer had fun feeding the dogs with some tasty treats. Most of all, the team spent quality time bonding with colleagues from various departments.

Later, Mr Michael Hanratty presented a mock cheque of RM1,000 to Ms Sandy Lim. Through the “We Care” CSR Programme, G Hotel also sponsored 300kg of rice, while the donation drive collected 150kg of rice and 10kg of dog food from the hotel staff.

“We are all-in to contribute back to our community and support non-profit organisations like PGSR, who truly love animals minus profit-making. Through our CSR programme, we hope that more people will be a part of community giving, whether it is through donation, adoption of rescued animals or other forms of kind acts,” says Mr Michael Hanratty.

Ms Sandy Lim was thrilled to host G Hotel staff for the day and to receive generous contributions to PGSR as the cost to run the shelter is high and individual donations are often insufficient. “PGSR is currently home for about 200 dogs and 30 more at my own house. We also hired 4 workers to help with operational cleaning of the shelter and care for the dogs. However, as we get many calls to rescue stray dogs and cats daily, the number of sheltered animals and cost are increasing at PGSR,” she said.

A day at PGSR for Ms Sandy Lim would be routine checks on all the rescued dogs and when there are any calls from the public that they see a stray in Penang, she will dash to the scene and look for the lost animal. Ms Sandy Lim will save every breed and kind, as well as send them for treatment if needed. Then, she will post the pictures of the dogs on the PGSR Facebook page and will be in touch with people interested to adopt one. Prior to giving the dogs away for free, she will conduct a house-visit, ensuring that the adopters are loving and pet- responsible people. Unlike most organisations, PGSR does not sell rescued dogs as pets, rather donation is completely on a free-will basis. She added that often the adopters take the dogs home for free and only a few would pay it forward with a love gift.

As a leading hotel in Penang, G Hotel has always been a benevolent contributor to charitable causes in our community. The adoption programme at PGSR is the first corporate social responsibility activity in 2018, as G Hotel kicks-off its “We Care” programme this quarter. Previously, G Hotel has also organized numerous charitable outreach events since the opening in 2007, such as celebrating yearly festivals with the underprivileged, donating furniture to schools, cleaning of Gurney Drive area, mangrove rehabilitation programme, organizing F&B and hospitality educational classes for Homes and schools, Go Green Programme, caring for animals and many more.
