Garuda Indonesia, the airline of Indonesia, has officially returned to Brisbane today after a five year break. The almost full inaugural flight to Denpasar departed at 08.40am this morning on a Boeing 737-800 NextGen.

First announced by the airline’s president and CEO Emirsyah Satar at the Garuda Indonesia Travel Fair in Jakarta in November 2012, the new route increases the carrier’s weekly services to 52 per week and is part of the Quantum Leap strategy, which aims to boost the its competitiveness significantly by 2015.

Commenting on the new route, Bagus Y. Siregar, Vice President for Garuda Indonesia Australia and SWP said: “Australian travel to Indonesia is growing every year; in the South-West Pacific region we saw a 20% increase in passengers in 2012. We have also seen a significant growth in demand in the Queensland leisure market, so we are very pleased to finally be back in Brisbane.

“Our Queensland customers now have the opportunity to fly direct to Indonesia and other key Asian destinations, catering to both leisure and corporate markets.

“For our Business Class passengers, Garuda Indonesia also offers a free* limousine service to and from Brisbane airport. This is another way we are accommodating our Brisbane passengers before, during and after their flight with us. But also our Economy Class passengers will enjoy flying with us, as we’ve been recently voted the ‘World’s Best Economy Class’.

Julieanne Alroe, Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO and Managing Director said: “We congratulate Garuda Indonesia on it its relaunch today and we are delighted to welcome Indonesia’s national carrier back to Brisbane.

“The daily direct flights between Brisbane and Indonesia will not only provide travellers with greater choice and convenience, the return of Garuda Indonesia to Brisbane will help strengthen tourism and trade in both directions,” Ms Alroe said.

Passengers will be able to enjoy the Garuda Indonesia Experience with a uniquely Indonesian in-flight menu, warm hospitality – reflected in the service, on-board décor and its staff – and a Video on Demand (VOD) entertainment systems offering 35 feature films, 10 television programs, 48 music albums and 25 interactive video games.

With Garuda Indonesia’s free sporting equipment allowance all passengers will also be able to take up to 23kg extra checked baggage in addition to the carrier’s baggage allowance of 30kg in Economy and 40kg in Business Class.
