There’s still time to plan a getaway for the June – July school holidays. Here are some ideas both at home and abroad from the experts at Abercrombie & Kent.

Broome & Beyond

When the southern states are at their chilliest, head across the country to the remote Kimberley region where sunshine is guaranteed almost year round. Starting in Broome there’s award-winning family friendly accommodation, 22km of beach to relax on, camel riding, hovercraft explorations and an educational introduction to pearling. Travel by 4WD north to the unique Kooljaman at Cape Leveque wilderness camp where you’ll meet indigenous guides and learn about traditional fishing methods, go snorkelling, take beach or reef walks even whale watching.

A&K’s 7-day ‘Broome & Beyond: A Family Adventure’ itinerary from $2,625 per person (based on 2 adults and 2 children travelling).

Island of the Gods

Easily accessible and serviced by regular flights, Bali is at its best in our winter months and the contemporary all-villa Banyan Tree Ungasan is the perfect place to flop and drop. Villas are perched on the cliff top with private pools and landscaped gardens and those sunset views. Adult pursuits include heavenly spa treatments, yoga and gourmet dining, while young kids are welcomed with open arms at the Turtle Club. Teens can relax by the pool, take nature walks, check out the nearby surf or simply chill in the villa.

A&K’s 6-day ‘Hideaway: Banyan Tree Ungasan’ escape is priced from US$2,325 per adult.

Cool and casual in Croatia

If Europe calls, then head to Croatia. Famous for its crystal clear waters, palm lined harbours and quaint fishing villages, it also has historic monuments galore. There are wonderful beaches, plenty of sun and enough to keep the whole family entertained. In Split, a resort hotel lets families soak up the sun as well as explore the ancient Palace of Diocletian. A day of cycling along the Cetina River is a highlight as well as the island of Hvar on the Dalmatian Coast where a day’s yachting is fun for all.

In Dubrovnik there’s a walk along the old city walls and ramparts as well as a visit to the sea Aquarium and a cable car ride up Mount Srd for spectacular views of the city, coastline and outlying islands. A day’s sea kayaking is included plus inland walks or a visit to the old Benedictine Monastery. The journey ends at Dubrovnik airport where you can visit a natural karst cave that has been discovered underneath the runway!

A&K’s 9-day ‘Active Family Adventure in Croatia’ itinerary is priced from $9,215 per adult and $4,675 per child (based on a family of 4).

Big, bold Brazil

Take the family to South America’s largest nation before Olympics fever kicks in. Share the excitement of flamboyant Rio where the surf is up nearly all year round and the beaches beckon. There are also some iconic sights to tick off: the famous Sugar Loaf which 007 fans will remember from ‘Moonraker’, Copacabana beach immortalised in the catchy words of Barry Manilow, the Statue of Christ the Redeemer and a visit to one of the city’s upbeat slum districts. A long way north, families will explore Salvador da Bahia which has a charming old town, interesting rural surrounds, sparkling beaches and colourful markets. A demonstration of capoeira which combines dance with martial arts is sure to impress young and old alike and you’ll finish the journey with a flourish at Iguassu Falls.

A&K’s 9-day ‘Best of Brazil’ journey is priced from $7,440 per adult.

Take the tribe to Africa

Introduce your children to the splendours of the animal kingdom on a family friendly safari in South Africa. Wildlife encounters and tailored activities to suit children are part of the excitement at Madikwe Safari Lodge in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, and Lion Sands Private Game Reserve. The two bush experiences include game drives by day and night, junior tracking activities and animal identification, as well as time to relax. A stay in cosmopolitan Cape Town is a great balance to the bush, with a cable-car ride up Table Mountain, mountain biking at the Cape of Good Hope cycling through the townships and lodgings at a chic More Quarters apartment hotel.

A&K’s 12-day ‘Family Adventure in South Africa’ itinerary is priced from $8,333 per adult.
