Preparations are in full swing for the annual festival presented by Fraser Coast Opportunities, celebrating the achievements of the Maryborough-born author of Mary Poppins, Pamela Travers.
One of the highlights of this year’s inaugural Fraser Coast Street Life Festival, the Mary Poppins Festival in the Park will be held on Sunday 5 July from 10am t0 4pm.
Manager of Tourism and Events for Fraser Coast Opportunities, Tas Webber, said the festival would spread across Maryborough’s glorious Queens Park and Mary River Parklands, spilling into its historic Wharf Street portside precinct.
“Magic will be in the air as these heritage streetscapes are transformed into Cherry Tree Lane of the Poppins novels and characters come to life, including Admiral Boom, who fires his time cannon throughout the day.”
“Nanny races, chimney sweep challenges, sidewalk art, street theatre and circus workshops are part of a packed program that includes a grand costume parade and live music.”
“A special focus this year is on interactive craft experiences for the kids and there will be loads of children’s workshops filled with hands-on, creative sessions involving puppets, circus troupes, arty umbrellas, vintage styling makeovers and more,’’ Mr Webber said.
Mr Webber said participants could register on the day for the Great Nanny Race and put their pram-pushing prowess to the test.
“This year we are providing wooden prams for the event which should be plenty of fun,’’ he said.
The call is also out for people to dress up and take part in the hilarious Chimney Sweep Challenge for the young and young at heart.
Mr Webber said the Mary Poppins Festival was growing in popularity each year, drawing visitors from throughout South East Queensland and beyond.
“You could not create a more perfect setting for the festival than Maryborough’s riverside parks and heritage streetscapes. With just a spoonful of imagination they will transform into pages from the novels, creating a fantasy experience for both young and old.”
