Getting The Most Out Of A Fiji Holiday On A Budget

A retired Australian gent fixed in his ways stays annually at the Mercure in Nadi in the same room at the same time of the year and has the same schedule. This hotel, a 10 minute drive from the airport hosts many regulars, including holiday makers and local and international business people. Rooms are spacious, if you are on the ground floor you have direct car access from the front and the pool, bar and dining room from the back terrace. It is ideal as a bolt hole for a good value stay and an opportunity to explore the main island and the many smaller islands without paying the five star premium.

The property is on a couple of acres which includes tennis courts and children’s play grounds. Staff are very friendly and try and call guests by their names “Mr John” etc. They go out of their way to provide good service. It was a bit like home after the first couple of days. Martintar is about 5 k’s from Nadi airport. The hotel has a highly recommended restaurant and there are many good eateries within walking distance of the Mercure on Queens Road. Chan’s Seafood restaurant, Sitar – Indian and Thai, Korean BBQ and The Bounty, New Zealand rump and sirloin are excellent and why not, its previous owner was a Kiwi.

Ed’s Bar has been there forever, eclectic clientele, is chockers when there is a rugby international. Open from 5pm until 5 am. Then there are two night clubs within 100 metres of each other, Whitehouse and Ice House. Guests are certainly not short of activities to keep them amused around the clock. Cafe Taste is a good haven for coffee, snacks and a late brunch.

It is always a good idea to hire a car in Fiji as it makes life much easier to get into Nadi town for the shopping and produce markets. A drive to the beach, or a day trip to Sigatoka, Lautoka or further down the Coral Coast.  There are many hire car companies with very varying prices but you can also hire a car through the Accor hotels.  Often online booking site prices for accommodation or hire cars do not show the government tax. The final costs should always be reflected in the online offers. When in Nadi town don’t miss out on a meal at Bohai Seafood Restaurant, upstairs in the main drag. The lobster is to die for.

If you are looking for something a little more upmarket, Accor has another two hotels all close to Nadi airport, the four star Novotel and the four star Sofitel on Denarau Island. There is also the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club with a magnificent 18 hole course and a great bar and dining facilities. The Denarau Marina is a hub for all types of boating activities and has some interesting shopping plus a variety of restaurants.

Fiji Airlines, Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar all fly from Sydney to Nadi offering competitive fares.

Bulla, we will return for some more Bulla Vinaka hospitality.
