The World Tourism Organization is coordinating the implementation of the “International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development” on behalf of the United Nations General Assembly. German National Tourist Board (GNTB) is a Gold sponsor of this UNWTO year, showcasing Germany to the international community as a travel destination with an exemplary sustainable tourism offering and services.

To kick off the international year’s theme, the GNTB has launched a new DZT micro site on “Sustainable Travel in Germany”.

Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the GNTB, explains: “sustainable offerings are essential. Therefore we have purposely anchored the aspect of sustainability as a significant facet of Destination Germany’s brand essence.”

The micro site offers information on sustainable travel in 17 languages including green travel by train, bus or public transportation, accommodation, culinary delights, customs & traditions, UNESCO world heritage sites, slow travel and natural landscapes, green cities, incl. up cycling, wellness / spa & thermal waters, accessible travel and green meetings.

Using an interactive map of Germany, users can find sustainable certified accommodation options, ranging from basic eco-camping to five-star hotels. Experts from EcoTrans in collaboration with state marketing organizations select certificates. Powerful images, slide shows, and videos create an authentic look and feel, and consistent optimization for portable devices supports user-friendly travel planning, including on the go.

The GNTB has developed and expanded its competencies on the topic of sustainability, sharing its knowledge with partners in a variety of formats and linking competencies within its network.

The GNTB has also anchored the aspect of sustainability in the brand essence as part of the second pillar, the “communications strategy.” The GNTB presents the high standards achieved by Destination Germany at international workshops and conferences on a regular basis. In the context of the internal sustainability initiative the GNTB consistently optimizes its activities from an ecological, economic and social perspective as well as its internal workflows.

The GNTB has been organizing the largest sales event for German incoming tourism, the GTM Germany Travel Mart, as a green meeting since 2012. The successes that the GNTB has achieved are reflected in its Green Globe certification, its recognition as an Ecoprofit Company (Oekoprofit-Betrieb) Frankfurt and its inclusion in the Energy Efficiency Networks Initiative (Initiative Energieeffizienz-Netzwerke) supported by the German federal government.
