settlements that make it a good place for spiritual and religious tourism. Recent (till 1961) four and a half centuries of Portuguese rule has left its legacy behind in Goa. Western Ghats are now designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites for their rich bio-diversity.”

275 hosted buyers and 60 media from across the world participated at GITM 2014 held from 2 to 4 April. 100 exhibitors from Goa and other parts of India presented their tourism products.

Goa’s tourism started in 60’s and 70’s as default by hippies who sought temporary shelter on Goa’s beaches and it continues to attract worldwide tourists.

Goa’s chequered past of Hindu, Muslim and Christian rule has left a rich and cordial tradition in its people. 60 percent of Goa is under green cover. It is home to 423 bird species.

Mr Desai said: “Goa celebrates some of the most colourful festivals like the carnival, Shigmo festival, Diwali and many others. We’re ready to focus on festival tourism with one or two events every month. Cashew (nut) festival will be launched this May.”
