The nights big winner was Public Inn Castlemaine  which took out the overall culinary award for the first time, from a strong field – with more than double the number of venues from the previous year – that included The Brougham Arms, The Malayan Orchid, Brewhouse and the Corner Store Cafe.  Commenting on the win judging panel President and industry legend Rita Erlich said:“What is on offer at Public INN is so close to perfect. In fact, Wagyu Beef, grilled tongue and oxtail croquette at Public Innthis is the model of what a contemporary Australian pub should be.  There are so many things that this place is doing right that it would fill quite a list.”

The Chef of the year for the Bendigo Region was The Brougham Arms Greg Egan, who wowed the judges at the recent “cook-off” in Melbourne with his creativity and cooking skills.  Greg is now well and truly in the running for the Garuda Indonesia Chef of the Year Sate Prize that will be announced at the final event of the awards season in Geelong on November 11th.

Judges also made special mention of Wholesome Bean which won Best Cafe – Unlicensed. Not only was it a first time entry for the cafe  but they will go on to represent Bendigo as a finalist for Best Cafe in the state award to be announced on 11th November in Geelong. According to the judges, Bendigo is “awash with brilliant cafe’s and would have to be serving up some of the best coffee in Victoria and in this field Wholesome Bean stood out.

The judges award for Innovation, which is new this year, went to Brewhouse for their great contribution to the Bendigo food and coffee scene.
