Penang recently celebrated its first Oktoberfest to a packed house at Golden Sands Resort, Penang’s Sigi’s Bar & Grill.

The restaurant by the beach was transformed into a miniature Bavarian village complete with waitress clad in fräulien costumes, wooden benches, long tables and tablecloths in the colours of the Bavarian flag. The Oktoberfest celebration rocked the entire bar with a nonstop performance by the Franken Rauber brass band specially flown in from Munich for the occasion.

Both guests and local diners enjoyed the evening while having their fill of German beers and indulging in a variety of Bavarian specialities, such as Bratwurst, Bratkartoffein, Sauerkraut, Chicken Schnitzels, Beef Goulash, Pretzels and a dozen of sweet desserts, including the traditional Kaiserschmarrn and Apple Strudel.

Guests swayed and danced to the upbeat tunes of Bavarian songs like Ein Prosit Der Gemutlichkeit (‘Salute to Our Crazy Friendship and Good Times We Have Together’). There was non-stop singing and dancing to the traditional song Rosemunde, easy-listening pop favourites, such as Take Me Home, Country Roads and Sweet Caroline, as well as German favourites Rock Mi and Viva Colonia.

The six-piece band was a crowd-puller with their lively and wacky folk dance, chicken dance with arm-flapping moves, which in turn got everyone dancing together and moving as a jolly bunch in an impromptu chain dance.

In addition to dancing, guests were entertained with some amazing performances, such as flute playing with the nose, making music from a water pitcher and blowing music from the long alphorn or alpenhorn, a Swiss musical instrument. There was traditional and contemporary music, as well as a beer-drinking competition for men and women.

The Oktoberfest event gave the bar an unusually lively atmosphere. It turned out to be a success with the locals and international guests, who took in m full Bavarian experience gleefully. It was a great night full of fun, dancing, music and free-flowing cold German beer.
