Golf course crocodile attacks as airport alligator lurks

egtmedia59A tourist is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a crocodile while playing golf in Mexico. In Chicago, meanwhile, authorities are hunting for a woman who left an alligator at the city’s O’Hare International Airport.

The two reptilian stories, while not believed to be linked, provide a warning to travellers that dangers can lurk in unexpected places.

Dougie Thompson, 58, who was visiting Mexico from Canada for a family wedding, told London’s Daily Mirror he clipped a shot from a bunker onto the green during a golfing break when a crocodile suddenly emerged from water behind some bushes, lunged at him and bit him on the thigh.EGT_Artical Banner A 250x250

“I couldn’t feel pain, I was in total shock,” he told the paper. “It was like a big toy, big black eyes looking at me.”

Friends rushed to his rescue, whacking the croc with golf clubs while another drove a golf cart over it.

But for that quick action by his golfing friends, Thompson said, the croc would have “pulled me back into the lagoon and had me for supper.” Thompson said the reptile had left his leg looking like a “butcher’s shop window”.

In Chicago, meanwhile, the hunt is on for a woman who left an alligator at O’Hare International Airport. Security footage showed the woman holding the alligator on her knee while she chatted on the phone. The reptile, less than a metre long, was later found under an escalator at Terminal 3 at the airport. Nicknamed “Allie” by a local rescue group, the alligator is being rehabilitated by volunteers at the Chicago Herpetalogical Society.

Animal workers say the alligator is too small to be a threat. They just want to find its owner.
