Good Europe travel news with France back on the rails

egtmedia59What’s rail travel in Europe without France? Travellers have had about a year to ponder that question since France abruptly withdrew from the popular Eurail Pass last year.

By popular demand – and after a decision by SNCF, the French rail operator – France has re-joined the scheme, effective 1 April 2014. Travelling around Europe by rail is a much easier proposition with France included in the pass.

Rail Plus, in making the announcement, added that the selection of Eurail Select passes will be simplified, with a single pass now offering unlimited travel through four adjoining European countries, and the current three- and five-country passes no longer available. Three- and five-country passes purchased before 27 March 2014 can still be used, as long as they are validated within the SNCF TGV-R at Paris Gare du Nordusual six months from the date of issue.

Rail Plus general manager sales and marketing Greg McCallum described the return of French rail operator SNCF as welcome news for Australasian travellers.

“France is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Europe, and as a result its withdrawal from the Eurail Select Pass in 2013 impacted the product’s popularity in the Australian and New Zealand markets,” McCallum said.

“With France now participating, I have no doubt agents will embrace the four-country Eurail Select Pass, helping it quickly reclaim its position as one of Rail Plus’ most popular rail products.”

Effective 1 April 2014 the four-country Eurail Select Pass will offer a choice of five, six, eight or 10 days travel within a two month period (days do not need to be consecutive). Adjoining countries must be bordering and be linked by a direct (not through another country) train or shipping line.
