Good value in the heart of old Singapore

We decided when the boys were small that the best way to show them the world was via cruising. As they got bigger and their appetites grew accordingly, I was even more convinced we had made the right decision. They are 25 now but still insist on the annual family jaunt aboard a Royal Caribbean liner. This year we headed for Asia’s safe house, Singapore, to pick up Mariner of the Seas for seven days. Two rooms in a reasonable hotel in Singapore can be stupidly expensive so I spent some time researching for a value family friendly property offering WiFi and breakfast as part of a deal that would not break the bank. The best offers came from a company called Far East Hospitality – we chose the Village Hotel Bugis – and not just because of the price.

The hotel is well located minutes away from Singapore’s Arab Peranakan, and Little India. You really can get a taste and the smells of old Singapore as you stroll about this area but if five star shopping beckons – Orchard Road is only a $6 cab ride way. If you are on your own, the subway is close by. We arrived late in the evening – the boys were in a deluxe room – ours a superior with a king bed. Of the two, they got the best deal. They were upstairs in a modern section overlooking a leafy street – we were at the end of an outside walkway on the ground floor. Comfortable and a good size the room certainly was, but superior? No. The worst aspect was the fact that there was no light coming in at all. One look the next day and the boys aptly named our room The Dungeon. Not all was bad – the aircon was efficient and quiet but the lighting was odd to say the least. There were no switches at the door other than at the toilet – controls were at bedside and that was it.

The bath/shower combo always grates but it worked well, towels were fine, we got two bottles of water each and a very comfy king bed. There was room to put our bags down, we had a mini bar (not stocked) and tea/coffee facilities plus a phone offering free calls to lots of countries including Australia. Amazing. It’s called Handy and features include a city guide plus discounts and offers. We used it every day. Great idea. Desk power outlets were international, we had an iron and board, full length mirror, safe hairdryer and robes. There is an excellent gym nearby with new equipment. My only other criticism is the fact that getting our room made up took forever. The breakfast is excellent – make sure you try an omelette. Finally, the room was very quiet until a door slammed shut nearby.

To Conclude: Interesting location – plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. Very tidy,
