Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a new campaign designed to promote tourism at historic equal rights attractions across New York.http://join.travelmanagers.com.au/ The campaign is being rolled out in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State. The first TV commercial of this campaign features the Susan B. Anthony house in Rochester, and can be viewed here. Additional commercials planned in the campaign will feature equal rights destinations like the Harriet Tubman home in Auburn and the Stonewall National Monument in Manhattan.

“New York has a proud legacy of promoting equal rights, and this campaign will raise awareness of our state’s destinations surrounding those historic events,” Governor Cuomo said. “I encourage visitors from near and far to get out and experience these attractions to learn about the critical role that the state played in shaping history and enacting progressive change for future generations.”

A new I LOVE NEW YORK brochure highlighting New York State’s proud history of equal rights and related destinations will be available in-person at select locations, or online at www.iloveny.com/equalrights. Attractions listed include events and sites dedicated to abolition and African-American history, suffrage and women’s rights, and LGBT and human rights.

“New York women have led the nation when it comes to furthering women’s rights, so it is exciting to showcase our history in a way that also enhances tourism in our state,” Lieutenant Governor Hochul, Chair of the New York Women’s Suffrage Commission, said. “As visitors tour the special sites that New York offers, I hope they will be inspired by the legacy of the advocates that came before us and continue the quest to ensure equal treatment for all.”

As part of this campaign, New York State will be promoting its equal rights tourism destinations across additional platforms, including the free, award-winning I LOVE NEW YORK app. Visitors to equal rights locations this summer will be encouraged to share their experiences at these attractions using #EqualRightsinNY.

New York State has played a critical role in the fight for women’s equality, from hosting the first-ever Women’s Rights Convention in 1848, to the passage of the Women’s Equality Agenda in 2015. A 14-member NYS Women’s Suffrage Commission, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, will plan and execute a series of statewide programs commemorating suffrage efforts in New York.

New York State was at the forefront of the Underground Railroad, and a national leader in the abolition and anti-slavery movements. Abolition leaders like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman made their home in the Empire State, and New Yorkers like Gerrit Smith were dedicated to not only the abolition of slavery but the guarantee of equal rights to all Americans.

Since 2011, Governor Cuomo has made unprecedented investments in the tourism industry throughout New York State, leading to historic levels of visitors and direct spending. New York recently welcomed 234 million visitors who spent over $63 billion, generating a total economic impact of more than $100 billion for the second straight year. Additionally, tourism the state’s fourth largest employer, supporting more than 910,000 jobs annually.

New York State features 11 beautiful vacation regions, featuring landmarks such as Niagara Falls, the largest park in the continental U.S. in the Adirondacks and treasures such as the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the Corning Museum of Glass. New York State offers diverse activities for all: outdoor fun – snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding, fishing, hiking and boating, year-round festivals and exploring the rich history and culture of one of the 13 original colonies.
