Grand Hyatt Hong Kong’s recently completed Grand Suites, by leading Melbourne design firm

BAR Studio are continuing to capture the attention of sophisticated travellers – and also the tourism and hospitality industry.

The hotel’s stunning Grand Suites, specifically its Ambassador Suite, has been acknowledged by Sleeper Magazine’s prestigious AHEAD Asia, the Awards for Hospitality and Design Experience.

The AHEAD awards celebrate design in hospitality projects worldwide. The Asia awards event held recently in Singapore, placed the spotlight on design innovation and the best new hotels in the region, and was the first of eight regional awards ceremonies being held around-the-world during 2017 and 2018. Categories for winners included Bar, Club or Lounge, Restrooms, Hotel Renovation & Restoration, Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces, Lobby & Public Spaces, Resort Hotel, Restaurant, Spa & Wellness, Suite, Urban Hotel, with Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, winning the award for Best Suite.

Conceived by Stewart Robertson, Principal/Director of BAR Studio, the design inspiration for the harbourside hotel’s Grand Suites came from the idea of telling a story of fictional travellers. BAR Studio imagined the travellers whose cultural journeys have brought them to this landmark hotel. For each traveller, a suite was conceptualised with its own distinctive character. And yet, as a whole, the stunning Grand Suites are a refined collection of exclusive, individual residence-like spaces within the hotel.

The suites recognise Hong Kong’s position as a gateway between the East and the West; its oriental heritage and contemporary outlook. Robertson fused clean lines and modern simplicity with traditional Asian influences and accents throughout the spaces. The suites make the most of spectacular views of the city skyline, Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon Peninsula connecting guests with the vibrance of Hong Kong, while providing them with a personal sanctuary. In this way the Grand Suites expand and enlarge upon the luxurious and relaxed feel of the new guest rooms throughout the hotel – with their accent on the view, their mix of east and west, classic and contemporary design elements. Each of the Specialty Suites is characterful and individual, and also grounded in a design and layout that is classic and comfortable.

The Ambassador Suite has been designed for a traveller possessing ‘Bohemian Chic’. Imagining a free-spirited sophisticate who has travelled through east and passionately explored foreign places, attitudes and cultures, BAR Studio devised a soft, meditative palette of pale timbers, leather and stones, golds and bronzes – accented with dark timber framing. The luxurious 100-square-metre space is complete with a sitting area, entertainment area and pantry. Textures create interest, such as paisleys, prints and Chinese-influenced fabric designs – seen in the hand-painted, embroidered Fromental silk wall covering which frames the bed, organic patterned damask silk inserts set into the backs of the dining chairs, and a pattern of woven marble mosaic running through the bathroom floor and walls. Soft colours are layered throughout the suite giving it a feeling of elegance and flair. Hervé van der Straeten’s dramatic bronze wall sconce adds a note of sophisticated primitivism, and together with the considered collection of lighting, contemporary and classic art, the suite has an air of eclectic elegance.

AHEAD’s team of judges, comprises industry leading hoteliers, architects, and interior designers and their comments on the Grand Hyatt’s Ambassador Suite included that it is ‘Comfortable, warm, detailed and disciplined’ with the aspirational design offering a ‘definitive feeling of an upgrade’.

Additional Specialty Suites BAR Studio has produced for hotel’s collection include another Ambassador Suite suited for an ‘Aristocratic Adventurer’. This 80-square-metre suite features a generous sitting room and its striking palette contrasts ebony timber and black lacquer, with pale walls, black and white marble and minimal detailing with ornate mouldings. Modern timber furniture is layered with exotic details such as embossed leather, and mid-century touches are seen in the lighting. Objects, sculptures and artworks add a sense of drama and suggest a connoisseur’s eye for collecting. The Presidential Suite, is inspired by an urban traveller and highlights a ‘ Contemporary Eclectic Style’. The palette is subtle and refined, enriched with contrasts in finish and texture. Soft grey stone and white marble are paired with pale timber walls, the simplicity of floorboards is contrasted with luxurious carpets in subtle tones. In keeping with the eclectic feel, the design highlights a combination of Asian and European design elements – a classic Chinese armoire placed with contemporary sofas and artwork, a green silk wall covering as the backdrop  for objects ceramics and glass pieces, and a modern interpretation of a four poster bed anchoring the bedroom. Another Presidential Suite, relflects a ‘Classic Traditional’ traveller, who appreciates the finer things in life. Cultured without being conservative, the palette includes black and white marble, black-lacquered timber and rich silk wall coverings. A mix of Asian and antique furniture is complemented with details such as hand-finished metal handles and pulls on doors, and hand-painted, embroidered, customised Fromental silk wall coverings. Crystal chandeliers add to the overall effect of relaxed sophistication and refined tastes.

“Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is a Hong Kong institution,” highlights Rowena Hockin, Communications Director, BAR Studio.  “The revamped Grand Suites bring a fresh attitude to these premier guest rooms; maintaining a strong sense of their history, their Hong Kong location, but seen through the lens of a new design narrative inspired by the rich history of the hotel. We’re very pleased to receive this recognition for the hotel.”
