Grand Raid 2013: The return of the madmen to Reunion!

October 30, 2013 Tourist Boards No Comments Email Email

The Diagonale des Fous (Madman’s diagonal) is part of an international sporting approach, with the presence on Reunion Island of participants from all over the world.

Once again, this year the IRT (Reunion Island Tourism) is participating in welcoming outside participants and their supporters from their arrival at the Roland Garros airport. Besides the economic challenge and the commercial significance, the Grand Raid is both an individual and a collective human adventure, during which competitors push themselves to the limits, but also compare themselves to other sporting people. In 2013, the 3 races (the Diagonale des Fous, the Mascareignesm and the Trail de Bourbon) bring together 5,262 runners in total.

The Grand Raid is a remarkable adventure on Reunion Island, which has been rooted in cultural identity and heritage now for 21 years. Much more than an international annual sporting event, the Grand Raid gives Reunion Island a visibility beyond the Indian Ocean as regards the diversity of its countryside and historical sites as well as its varied population.

It’s completely natural that IRT should be present each year at this wide-ranging event. A partner of the Grand Raid, IRT, in its role of promoting the 20131023-2343_mReunion Island destination for external markets, is taking charge of a press trip made up of 5 journalists. The journalists are going to take part in the race but also broadcast via their media supports. Also, the competitors from abroad will be presented with a welcome gift when they arrive on Reunion Island. This is in order to add value to Reunion Island hospitality, already well known for its warmth to visitors.

The starting point for the 2013 edition of the Diagonale des Fous will be from the site of Ravine Blanche in Saint-Pierre, on October 17 at 2300. The runners will have to join the Piton Textor, descend via Kerveguen towards the sea at Joseph to pick up the Cilaos by the Benjoin ravine. They will come out of the Cirque de Mafate via the hills of Boeufs before reaching the Scout path going by the Merles plains. In total, it’s a course of 163.5 kilometers with over 9,917 meters in height difference which awaits the madmen this year!

As for the Trail de Bourbon, it will take place from October 19-20 for the 14th year. It is changing its route by going through the Gite de Belouve instead of the Cap Anglais to re-join Hell-Bourg.

Lastly, the start of the 3rd edition of Mascareignes will take place at Hell-Bourg on October 18. It will follow the same itinerary as the Trail de Bourbon, over a distance of roughly 70 kilometers with 3,500 meters uphill.

The departure times, the cut-off times, and the route are available on the Grand Raid site ( ).
