Cockatoo Island’s new Convict History Tours

During the Heritage Festival, the Harbour Trust will be offering special Cockatoo Island Convict History Tours.

On our 45-minute guided tour, you’ll discover the fascinating convict heritage of UNESCO-WorldHeritage-listed Cockatoo Island. The island was a convict prison between 1839-1869 and at its peak was home to 550 prisoners. The convicts were put to work quarrying sandstone for the fledgling colony of NSW and building a prison barracks, mess hall, solitary cells, grain silos, military guardhouse and official residences. They also built the Fitzroy Dock and workshops for the dock’s pumps and ship repair machinery. The completion of the Fitzroy Dock marked the start of the island’s shipbuilding history.
