Born in Cuba in 1934, Havana Club has since become not only the defining spirit of the vibrant Caribbean island nation, but also one of the best-selling rum brands in the world. This late summer, Havana Club proudly presents the first-ever cocktail collaboration,“Havana Club Inspirations”, with one of the best bars in the world, the award-wining Lobster Bar and Grill in Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong. Havana Club is also available in a growing range of premium bottlings: two very special new rums, Selección de Maestros and Havana Club Unión, are the latest to join the brand’s family of luxury iterations in Hong Kong.
Still authentically produced in Cuba, Havana Club remains at the forefront of new cocktail innovation today. The Havana Club Inspirations cocktail promotion showcases four new cocktails created by master mixologist Agung Prabowo, Bar Manager at Lobster Bar and Grill. Inspired by three much-loved staples of the Havana Club range, Añejo 3 Años and Añejo 7 Años and Anejo Special, the new Havana Club Inspirations also celebrate the launch of two new luxury Havana Club bottlings in Hong Kong: Havana Club Unión and Selección de Maestros.

To create its other new luxury product to launch in Hong Kong, the triple barrel aged Selección de Maestros, Havana Club gathered together all of the Maestros Roneros (a guild of master craftsmen) it works with to create unique aged rum. The Maestros Roneros first select the finest aged rums, which are matured in specially selected oak barrels; they then meet subsequently to find out which have matured best, with only those that have aged perfectly going into making Selección de Maestros. The result, bottled straight from the barrel at 45 per cent ABV, is exceptionally smooth, complex rum with a nose of toasted pecan and spice, and a full-bodied palate of cocoa, coffee, sweet tobacco and brown spices, following on to a smoky oak, spice and candied-fruit finish.
Apart from rum, Cuba’s other most famous and coveted product is undoubtedly its world-renowned cigars. Havana Club Unión is a new high-end rum that is not only designed to perfectly complement fine Cuban cigars, but also takes the meticulous process by which cigar tobacco is aged as its inspiration. The result of collaboration between Havana Club’s Maestro Ronero, Asbel Morales,
and Cuba’s leading cigar sommelier, Fernando Fernández, it is a blend of spirit bases expertly chosen by Morales, who also hand-picked the barrels in which it was aged; the process of repeatedly ageing and blending small batches of rare rums used to create it was directly inspired by the ageing, blending and maturing of the tobacco leaves used in Cuban cigars.
Setting an ideal backdrop for sophisticated cocktail experience, Lobster Bar and Grill features a long bar of mahogany timber, leather and stylish fabric upholstery and two beautiful marine aquariums which aesthetically enhance the bar atmosphere. The bar has also been was cited recently as one of the “Best International Hotel Bar” in Tales of the Cocktail’s 9th Annual Spirited Award and “World’s 50 Best Bars 2015” by Drinks International. Prabowo, who says he likes to give classic cocktails an Asian twist, takes preparing the perfect beverage so seriously that he even ages spirits himself in his own charred-oak barrels. A veteran of numerous cocktail-making competitions, he was champion at the International Bartender Association in 2007 and represented Hong Kong in the 2008 World Flairtending Competition.
Havana Club gets its signature sweet, smoky flavours from expert blending of sugarcane spirits by Cuba’s Maestros Roneros or Master Blenders, and ageing in American white oak bourbon barrels. The definitive rum of Cuba, it represents the fiery essence and spirit of freedom and creativity of the island, one of the spiritual homes of rum production.
Havana Club Unión and Selección de Maestros are available in Hong Kong from August 20, at the suggested prices of HK$4,380 and HK$580 respectively. The Havana Club Inspirations promotion takes place from August 20 to September 28 at Lobster Bar and Grill in Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong.
