egtmedia59A Hawaii man has pleaded guilty in federal court in Honolulu to calling the FBI and saying there was a hijacker aboard an Alaska Airlines flight from Kailua-Kona to Seattle.

Timothy David Hershman, 58, of Kailua-Kona, admitted making the call on Jan. 17 and saying that a “dangerous man” planned to hijack the plane, federal prosecutors said.

The flight was escorted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport by two F-15 jets from the Oregon National Guard and one man was taken off the plane and questioned by authorities, who then determined the call was a hoax. Hershman, a retired carpenter, confessed to making the call because the other man had allegedly put fish guts in his truck, prosecutors said.

Hershman faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on Oct. 7 by U.S. District Judge Michael Seabright.
