Hawaiian Airlines Now Allows Use of Portable Electronic Devices During All Segments of Domestic Flights

Hawaiian Airlines announced it has completed the certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and is now allowing customers to use their own personal Portable Electronic Devices (PED) on “airplane mode” during all phases of domestic flights, from takeoff through landing, and during more phases on international flights.

“We applaud the FAA’s new policy and are excited to allow our customers to use their devices throughout their flight when they travel with us,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines president and chief executive officer. “We’re committed to improving the travel experience for our customers.”

As approved by the FAA, Hawaiian Airlines now allows the use of personal electronics, gate-to-gate, across its fleet of wide-body, twin-aisle Airbus 330-200 and Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on domestic routes between Hawai‘i and 11 U.S. gateway destinations, as well as its fleet of Boeing 717-200 aircraft on Neighbor Island routes. The FAA policy covers domestic and international flights while within U.S. airspace, with certain restrictions below:

*In certain situations, the pilot and/or in-flight team may ask guests to turn off their PEDs during the flight.

Under previous FAA regulations, travelers were required to turn off and stow all electronic devices during flight when the aircraft is below 10,000 feet. The new policy allows Hawaiian Airlines customers to use their own personal small electronic devices that include smartphones, tablets, e-readers, music players and other small electronic devices under two pounds during all phases of the flight from gate-to-gate, with limited restrictions, unless otherwise instructed by the inflight crew.
