Heathrow has won a Sustainability Leaders Award for the new Terminal 2 building which opens its doors in 2014.

The design, construction and functionality of Terminal 2 (T2) makes it Heathrow’s most sustainable terminal yet.

The Sustainability Leaders Awards, held at the Connaught Rooms in London last night, celebrate leadership and innovation among companies and organisations, large and small, who make genuine progress in embedding sustainability throughout their operations. The panel of Judges included The displaymediaChairman of the Environment Agency and the Chief Operating Officer of the Carbon Trust.

Sustainability was a guiding principle in the construction of Terminal 2. The building includes an Energy Centre with one of the largest biomass boilers in the UK, saving 13,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. It also has a water efficiency plan to reduce water consumption by up to 30% and 10 metre high windows to maximise natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting. All these areas form part of Heathrow’s commitment to running Heathrow responsibly.

Heathrow was also shortlisted for the Stakeholder engagement award for the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership. The awards reflect Heathrow’s continued commitment to enhancing the local, regional and national economic and social benefits of the airport. The UK’s hub works with more than 320 businesses to establish innovative solutions and operating procedures needed to improve performance.

Last week, Heathrow was also named ‘Champion of Champions,’ winning four sustainability awards at International Green Apple Awards

John Holland-Kaye, Terminal 2’s Development Director said;

“We delighted to have been recognised for building a sustainable Terminal 2. We are committed to running Heathrow responsibly and will work closely with stakeholders, employees and passengers to continue to improve and build on this success across the airport.”
