Help call over tech keeps Emirates A380 in Melbourne

The captain of an Emirates A380 flight from Dubai was reported to have requested help last week before the plane landed at Melbourne Airport, when a “technical issue” forced the cancellation of onward service to New Zealand and left some passengers stranded in Melbourne.

The pilot of flight EK406 from Dubai to Melbourne alerted Melbourne Airport to an issue before it landed about 6am on Thursday, Melbourne’s Herald Sun reported.

The airport confirmed that the pilot asked for a “local standby, which isn’t an emergency”, the paper said.

Emergency services met the flight when it landed as a precaution. The problem was due to an unspecified technical issue. An Emirates engineering team checked the plane, which remained in Melbourne while passengers on the connecting flight to Auckland were rebooked on alternative services to avoid delay.

“Emirates apologises for any inconvenience caused, however the safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost importance,” and airline spokesperson said.
