Helping Passengers Buy Island Souvenirs with Quarantine Confidence

But knowing what items can be brought back to Australia or New Zealand with our understandably tight quarantine regulations can be a challenge.
And that might mean an island business can miss out on a sale that might otherwise have happened for the benefit of the local economy.

To help passengers and island traders buy and sell handicrafts and souvenirs with confidence, P&O Cruises is setting up special cabinets in all three of its ships – the cabinets contain items that are okay to buy.

The project is in partnership with the AusAID-funded Pacific Horticultural and Agriculture and Access Programs (PHAMA), which provides practical help to Pacific Islands on regulatory aspects of exporting primary produce.

“The cabinets are being fitted as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the opportunities for our Pacific Island community partners,” said Carnival Australia Destination Manager Michael Mihajlov.

“They provide clear quarantine information about what is and is not permitted to safely import into Australia and New Zealand.

“The aim is to improve education about locally produced handicrafts which are vital revenue streams for small producers.

“This is combined with ongoing efforts to better educate the producers themselves about regulations and demand for their products, while improving marketing techniques and small business management skills.”

Pacific Dawn was the first to have one of the cabinets installed and Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl will follow next month.
