Hilarious Improvised Puppet Mayhem Comes To Brisbane (Not For Kids!)

Like ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ meets ‘The Muppet Show’, a technically intriguing adult puppet show called “Show Of Hands” will be performed at this year’s Anywhere Theatre Festival using monitor puppetry – a television format developed by Jim Henson (creator of characters from The Muppets and Sesame Street).

Improvising puppeteers will perform short scenes, songs and games into a video camera. Hosted by “Troggg” the blue monster, this is two shows in one; puppeteers performing live on stage, with puppet characters projected onto a large screen.

The audience will be encouraged to contribute suggestions for the puppet characters to play out.

Owner and principal puppeteer of Queensland business Larrikin Puppets Brett Hansen, who has performed and trained in the USA with Henson puppeteers, said Show Of Hands works on many levels.

“It’s a show. Of hands. Our cast’s hands are raised up performing the puppets. The audience’s hands are raised up offering suggestions for the improvised scenes and games,” said Hansen.

A co-production of Odyssey Entertainment, Edge Improv and Larrikin Puppets, Show Of Hands is set to wow Brisbane audiences on May 18, 19, 25, and 26 as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival bill.

Anywhere Theatre Festival is all about performing anywhere but a theatre. The audience will experience a performance in a space they wouldn’t expect.

Hansen said performing in Salisbury’s fresh produce warehouse Food Connect would be a good way to bring attention to the growing arts hub of the Salisbury Industrial Estate.

“Food Connect may pack and distribute bananas by day, but audiences will be driven bananas by night when they see our crazy puppet show,” said Hansen.

Brett said he’s proud to be following in the footsteps of his idol Jim Henson, and bringing this rarely seen puppetry technique to Brisbane.
