Hilton (NYSE: HLT) today announced the signing of The Modern Christchurch, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, marking the first signing and launch of the Tapestry Collection brand in Australasia. The Modern will join Hilton’s portfolio of 27 hotels in Australasia presently operating under four brands, including Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Curio Collection by Hilton and DoubleTree by Hilton.

Under a franchise agreement with Sarin Investments Limited and in partnership with Tailorspace Limited, part of the Ben Gough Family Office, the hotel is slated to open in the third quarter of 2021.

“It has been wonderful to once again partner with Sarin Investments and Tailorspace Limited on what will be an outstanding addition to our current portfolio of hotels across the region,” said Rob Scullin, vice president development, Australasia. “Hilton presently has two other franchise agreements with Sarin Investments for DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington and DoubleTree by Hilton Napier Hotel & Suites, which is projected to open in the first quarter of 2020.”

Tapestry Collection by Hilton, which launched globally in 2017, is a collection of more than 20 upscale hotels, each with its own unique style and vibrant personality. Tapestry Collection properties offer guests an authentic connection to their destination while also providing them with the peace of mind and reassurance associated with the Hilton name, in addition to the benefits of the award-winning Hilton Honors program.

“We are delighted to announce the entry of Tapestry Collection by Hilton into the Australasian market with the signing of The Modern,” said Sean Wooden, vice president, brand management, Asia Pacific. “As New Zealand’s second largest city and the gateway to the country’s magnificent South Island, we are confident that the unique Tapestry Collection by Hilton brand ethos and The Modern’s stylish and design-led offering will be embraced by both business and leisure travellers alike.”

Located in the heart of Christchurch’s CBD at 79 Hereford Street, The Modern will offer guest rooms with room sizes starting from 34 square meters, including 45 square meter Deluxe Suites. The property will also incorporate a ground floor restaurant and bar, fitness centre, and on-site parking.

Brett Gamble, CEO, Tailorspace Property Limited, said, “We are excited to be working with Hilton and Sarin Investments to bring the first Tapestry Collection by Hilton to New Zealand and to continue to build quality accommodation for visitors to experience when visiting Christchurch.”

Contemporary art will be a cornerstone of The Modern experience, with large-scale prints by significant Christchurch and New Zealand artists adorning the walls of each room. The works will be selected in partnership with local Christchurch art specialists with the aim of celebrating Christchurch’s rich history of modern art and design. Complementing these works, and further continuing the overarching theme of modernism, the hotel will feature significant pieces of modernist furniture.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the Tapestry Collection by Hilton brand to Christchurch’s CBD and adding to the quality accommodation stock,” said Raman Sarin, chairman, Sarin Investments. “The hotel will be truly extraordinary and unlike anything else currently open or planned in Christchurch.”

The Modern will be the second Tapestry Collection by Hilton signing in Asia Pacific, joining the recent signing of The Resonance Taipei, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The 175-room hotel will be situated at the heart of Taipei’s city centre on East Zhongxiao Road and is slated to open at the end of 2020.
