Hilton Partners with The Smith Family to Offer Work Experience to Over 150 Disadvantaged Youths

Following a successful two years, Hilton has again partnered with national children’s education charity The Smith Family in Australia, as part of Careers@Hilton Week. Under the partnership, Hilton and The Smith Family will collaborate on the Work Inspiration program that will see over 150 disadvantaged youths gain work experience at one of the eight participating Hilton & DoubleTree by Hilton hotels across Australia over the month of May.

The unemployment rate for those aged 15 – 24 climbed during the Global Financial Crisis and has remained at around 13% ever since. This is more than double the 5.7% national average. Research from the Brotherhood of St Laurence also suggests that the rate of underemployment of the youth labour force is even greater, sitting at 18%. This means that one in three young Australians (more than 650,000) are currently unemployed or underemployed. [1]

“Careers@Hilton Week is an annual expression of our company’s vision to “fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality andour partnership with The Smith Family on the Work Inspiration program underscores Hilton’s global commitment to Open Doors to connect, prepare and employ one million young people around the world by 2019,” said Paul Hutton, vice president, Operations, Australasia, Hilton. “As a leading global hospitality company, we leverage our unique resources and expertise to support the needs of young people by providing meaningful work experiences.”

Dr Lisa O’Brien, CEO, The Smith Family, said, “We know that reaching young people early and facilitating connections with companies like Hilton is proven to boost their employability. Research tells us that young adults with four or five more employer contacts prior to leaving school are five times more likely to be engaged in employment or training than those with none.

Work Inspiration is a unique opportunity for disadvantaged students to gain a vast range of ‘work ready’ skills and a much better understanding of the job market – all of which we know are preconditions for a successful transition to work. For employers, Work Inspiration is a chance to give young people who need extra support a taste of the necessary skills and demands of a role – and of the modern workplace – and put them on a pathway to a fulfilling future.”

The Work Inspiration program offers engagement between Hilton Team Members and young Australians in a variety of ways, including:

  • Providing a unique opportunity for Team Members to be a part of participants’ growth throughout the program and engage in informative and meaningful career conversations.
  • Allowing participants to explore their interests and strengths as well as building communication and teamwork skills with each other and hotel Team Members.
  • Presenting groups of young Australians the experience of working in a hotel and going behind the scenes to see the variety of career opportunities available when working at a Hilton property.
  • Offering an experience where young people can gain an awareness of work ethics and develop a new confidence for their future careers.

The Work Inspiration partnership has seen a number of successes over the past two years including that of Enya Parr. Enya, who participated in the Work Inspiration program at Hilton Adelaide in 2015, has since commenced full time employment as a first-year apprentice chef at the hotel. Enya said, “The Work Inspiration program and Hilton have made a significant difference in my life and has provided me with a lot of big opportunities. What Hilton is doing for youth is amazing and I truly appreciate the opportunity that Hilton Adelaide and the Work Inspiration program have given me.”

Careers@Hilton Week events provide unique opportunities for Hilton Team Members to inspire job seekers about careers in the hospitality industry, and to support them by providing guidance on the skills that are vital to succeed in the workplace and beyond.

In previous years, participants have joined Hilton Team Members for events ranging from résumé clinics to networking, and attended Team Member presentations on hospitality career paths.
