Hilton Worldwide Partners with The Smith Family to Offer Work Experience to Over 150 Disadvantaged Youths
Following a successful first year, Hilton Worldwide has again partnered with the national children’s education charity The Smith Family in Australia, as part of the Careers@Hilton Live: Youth in Hospitality Month. Under the partnership, Hilton Worldwide and The Smith Family will cooperate on the Work Inspiration program that will see over 150 disadvantaged youths gain work experience at one of the 13 participating Hilton Worldwide hotels in Australia over the month of May.
In January 2015, the unemployment rate for 15-19 year olds reached 20%, a high not seen since the mid-1990s, and 1-in-5 unemployed Australians is now a teenager. Research from the Brotherhood of St Laurence suggests that those who experience unemployment while young are more likely to be unemployed, have poor health and have lower educational attainment when they are older than those who are not affected by unemployment while young. Through the partnership with the Work Inspiration program, Hilton seeks to ensure the disadvantaged youth have access to the best available information, and are aware of the opportunities the industry provides.

The Smith Family’s CEO, Dr Lisa O’Brien, said: “Supporting young people to make informed decisions about their future pathways needs to happen well before they try to enter the workforce.
“There is a huge discrepancy between the number of young people fully engaged in work or study according to their economic status – 42 percent of those aged 17 to 25 from the most disadvantaged areas are not fully engaged in work or study, compared with 17 percent from the most advantaged areas
“Work Inspiration is all about showing students what their futures could look like well before they finish school.
Working together with organisations like Hilton, we can provide young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the skills, resources and networks they need to avoid unemployment.”
The Work Inspiration program offers engagement between Hilton team members and young Australians in a variety of ways, including:
– Providing a unique opportunity for team members to be a part of the participant’s growth throughout the program and engage in informative and meaningful career conversations.
– Allowing participants to explore their interests and strengths as well as building communication and teamwork skills with each other and hotel team members.
– Presenting groups of young Australians the experience of working in a hotel and going behind the scenes to see the variety of career opportunities available when working at a Hilton property.
– Offering an experience where young people can gain an awareness of work ethic and a new confidence for a future career.
In the past year the Work Inspiration partnership between The Smith Family and Hilton Worldwide celebrated a number of successes including that of Jaiden Bistrovic. Jaiden who participated in the Work Inspiration program at Hilton Adelaide in 2015, has since commenced full time employment as a first-year apprentice chef at the hotel. Jaiden said “My aspiration is to become a head chef in a five star hotel, this has been my passion and goal for a number of years and I truly appreciate the opportunity that Hilton Adelaide and the Work Inspiration program have given me.”
Careers@Hilton Live: Youth in Hospitality events are a unique opportunity for Hilton Worldwide Team Members to inspire job seekers about careers in the hospitality industry, and to support them by providing guidance on the skills that are vital to succeed in the workplace and beyond.
Participants have been joining Hilton Worldwide Team Members for events ranging from résumé clinics to networking, as well as presentations from Team Members on their career paths in hospitality.
