Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited (“HML”), as the professional private management and operating company responsible for providing day to day management for the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (“HKCEC”), announced today that it has kicked off a US$3.9 million project to rebuild the entire Wi-Fi system at the HKCEC.  The new Wi-Fi system will enable HKCEC’s users and visitors to enjoy an unlimited and complimentary Wi-Fi service that will be high speed, high density, and highly reliable.

As the management company of a world-class convention and exhibition venue, HML embraces continuous innovation to keep the HKCEC at the leading edge in terms of offering users the best guest experience.  The new Wi-Fi network will feature the highest standard IEEE 802.11ac wave 2, as well as a new 10Gbps fibre network backbone for offering superb signal stability to meet the data demand generated by large numbers of guests simultaneously using the Wi-Fi network.

HML works with The new Wi-Fi system will deploy advanced high density Wi-Fi (HD Wi-Fi) solution provided by Cisco, the worldwide leader in IT and networking.  This solution provides smooth and reliable access to the Internet via mobile devices, even within a highly crowded exhibition venue, and sets a new benchmark for the event venue industry.

In addition to deploying the latest Wi-Fi technology standard, the US$3.9 million project will also involve installation of 660 new Wi-Fi access points, which will support more than 20,000 mobile devices with scalability.  Resilient optical fibre network infrastructure will be installed to give the network added flexibility and robustness, making it possible to scale up network bandwidth requirements to meet future demand and undergo system upgrades as technology advances.

The new Wi-Fi services will continue to be available on a complimentary basis.  It will allow event organisers, exhibitors, visitors, event attendees and restaurant guests to stay connected everywhere in the HKCEC – from browsing emails and websites, to viewing 4K streaming videos and engaging in real-time social media sharing of HD content, and more, in a faster and more stable environment.

The new Wi-Fi system can support Location Based Services (“LBS”) technology, allowing organisers to utilize their mobile applications for improving customer’s experience.  In this big data era, the LBS platform also allows organisers to analyse guest behaviours, improve crowd management and enhance guest experience.  HML will be able to provide configurable bandwidth for individual organisers or exhibitors upon request, and to offer premium services (paid pass) to visitors for additional bandwidth.  The captive portal feature in the new Wi-Fi system will provide customized Wi-Fi landing page to offer promotion opportunities for events.

The Wi-Fi project will take about one year to complete, and should be ready by Q3 of 2018.  The total area covered by the network will be 125,000 square metres, which will include all exhibition halls and function rooms, front of house areas, entrance lobbies and concourses, organiser offices and ancillary rooms, as well as restaurants.

Ms Monica Lee-Müller, HML’s Managing Director, said, “The HKCEC welcomes over 5.7 million visitors from around the world every year.  We understand that a high speed, high density, reliable and media-rich Wi-Fi experience is vital in enabling them to keep in touch with their homes and offices at all times.”

HML began providing a complimentary Wi-Fi service to HKCEC users and visitors as early as 2005, making the HKCEC a pioneer in the convention and exhibition industry in Asia for offering such service.  Since then, HML has invested in continuous upgrades to cater for rapidly growing needs of users for a media-rich Wi-Fi experience.
