Holiday makers ‘jet-scent’ around the globe

This week sees Heathrow’s brand new Terminal 2 operate at full capacity with all 26 airlines now in their new home. The now complete, transition period over the last five months has already seen three and a half million passengers’ fly out from Terminal 2 on over 21,000 flights.

With around 47 per cent of British travellers saying their holiday starts en route to the airport, Heathrow strives to offer the best airport experience from the moment they arrive. To excite the globetrotters travelling through the new terminal and to celebrate its completion, scents of its most fragrant destinations have been captured to take passengers on a sensory journey before even setting foot on their flights.

As they enter the departure lounge, travellers will be confronted by the giant, one-of-a-kind ‘scent globe’ which will immerse the curious in the aromas of Thailand; South Africa; Japan; China and Brazil.

These five destinations are a selection of the 28 countries that can only be reached from Heathrow in the UK. Heathrow sees over 11 million people a year on over 50,476 flights travel to and from these countries, taking in 69 destinations between them. The five countries chosen are not only popular with British travellers but also offer the most exciting smells.

With thousands of aromas being experienced when travelling, it’s not surprising that 87 per cent of Brits say that it’s the sights, sounds and smells that make their holidays memorable. By evoking these senses it helps Heathrow to highlight some of the airport’s most fascinating destinations to passengers.

Normand Boivin, Chief Operating Officer at Heathrow said, “Heathrow connects the UK to 180 destinations in 28 countries and carries over 72 million passengers a year. Heathrow is the UK’s hub airport; mixing direct passengers, transfers and freight to make long haul flights viable. We strive to offer a unique experience that delights our passengers.”

“These specially created scents will give passengers travelling through Terminal 2 an exclusive preview of destinations that only Heathrow connects to.”

To capture the essence of the five nations, Heathrow worked with Design in Scent, to produce bespoke scents from key ingredients associated with the designated country. The diverse fragrances aim to deliver an aromatic experience that transports passengers to far flung destinations.

South Africa captures the adventure of safari with notes of tribal incense, wild grass and musky animalics through the scent of Hyraceum[1], whilst Brazil embraces the scents of its rich rainforest fauna with a palette of coffee, tobacco and jasmine.

Japan is brought to life through cool, oceanic tones with a mix of seaweed and shell extracts, green tea and Ambergris[2]capturing the essence of small coastal villages so synonymous with the great Pacific Island.

The fragrance of both Thailand and China will transport travellers to the Far East in an instant. China’s mystical temple incense and subtle Osmanthus Fragrans[3] flower create an orient explosion as Thailand tantalises the taste buds with an appetising mix of lemongrass, ginger and coconut.
