In November 2013, Holland America Line’s Culinary Arts Center Program will host Chef Sean Connolly aboard ms Oosterdam.

He is scheduled to sail aboard ms Oosterdam on the New Zealand and Australia sailing departing Auckland 10 November 2013 and arriving in Sydney 24 November 2013, taking in the ports of Napier, Wellington, Akaroa, Dunedin, cruising Fiordland NP, and visiting Hobart and Melbourne.

Sean Connolly is an award-winning celebrity chef from Yorkshire in the UK. He led his team at Star City’s Astral to earn a Chef’s hat for an impressive five consecutive years from 2007 to 2011, and successfully positioned the restaurant as one of Sydney’s top fine-dining venues.

In 2009, Sean hosted the 13-part series of SBS’s “My Family Feast”, a loving celebration of Australia’s food and family life. The show has since won best TV show at the 2010 Australian Food Media Awards, and best TV series for food and wine culture at the world TV Food & Wine Festival.

After such success, he went to New Zealand in 2011 to team up with Skycity Auckland to open the multi-million dollar restaurant called ‘The Grill by Sean Connolly’. This was made into a 6-part documentary, ‘Under the Grill’, which captured Sean’s journey, armed with $4 million and a 100 day deadline to create a world-class restaurant from scratch.

The restaurant received rave reviews and won Best Restaurant at the prestigious New Zealand Cuisine Awards in 2012. Most recently, the restaurant has been awarded a prestigious ‘Two Hats’ at the Cuisine New Zealand Good Food Awards.

His latest venture, The Morrison, which he opened in 2012, is a New York style restaurant and oyster bar in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District.

“The Culinary Arts Center is at the core of Holland America Line’s cultural enrichment program and each year we bring on board the most talented and entertaining culinary experts in their field,” said Richard Meadows, Holland America Line’s executive vice president of marketing, sales and guest programs. “We want our guests to enjoy special and exclusive experiences and learning a new dish from a well-known chef is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Holland America Line’s Culinary Arts Center

Holland America Line’s industry trend-setting Culinary Arts Center, presented by Food & Wine magazine, is featured on each of the line’s 15 ships. A “world class show kitchen at sea,” the Culinary Arts Center resembles the elaborate show kitchens used by celebrity chefs on television cooking programs. The facilities are used for cooking shows, wine tastings, hands-on cooking classes and mixology presentations. All events are taught by highly-skilled culinary and beverage staff or special guest chefs during every Holland America Line voyage.

Each facility features a theater-style venue with two large video screens and a large cooking display counter. In partnership with Food & Wine magazine, Holland America Line has scheduled approximately 60 celebrated chefs and wine experts to sail in 2013. Holland America Line also offers a youth Culinary Arts Center activity program on select sailings to teach kids and teens how to cook. The program incorporates dishes from breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in complimentary 45-minute-long classes.
