Hong Kong Adjustment on Airport Passenger Security Charge

April 22, 2014 Airport No Comments Email Email

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) announced today that the passenger security charge, which is collected directly from each departing passenger at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), will be adjusted from the current HK$33 to HK$45 for tickets issued on or after 1 June 2014.

Tickets issued before 1 June will not be subject to the new charge even if the date of travel takes place on or after 1 June 2014. This is the first adjustment of the charge since 2002 which is made to recover the incremental costs incurred from additional security measures.

The AA said that the airport has deployed more manpower and upgraded technologies over the years to satisfy the additional security requirements for access control and security screening.  The adjustment is deemed necessary to recover the additional costs associated with these security measures and is in line with the principle of “user pays, cost recovery” as provided in the Hong Kong Aviation Security Programme.

The AA said the adjusted level is reasonable and comparable with the security charges levied at other international airports. HKIA is committed to maintaining the world’s highest standards of safety and security for local and international travellers.

The adjusted charge level has the support of the Board of Airline Representatives in Hong Kong, who was fully consulted during the decision-making process.
