Hong Kong takes second place on the podium for mobile flight searches to Rio

Ahead of the global sports competition in Rio, has analysed over one billion searches, spread over all 40 international KAYAK sites, to find out how countries are planning their travels. The travel search engine has looked into the data to see how different countries have been preparing for Rio and to award those nations that have earned elite status in various fields as part of KAYAK’s International Travel Games. Competing in eight different categories, the travellers of the world have been pitted against each other, and the nations taking their place on the podium have been summed up in a glorious infographic.

The International Travel Games Categories

The analysis by shows that the search and booking habits of each nation are both expected and surprising. While every country has shown great interest in travelling to Rio this August, the way each nation searches for travel gives deep insight into how they expect to get there. What better way to celebrate the exciting times ahead in August than by naming the world’s winners, in a selection of categories, of the International Travel Games.

Mobile: Most likely to search on the go

Some travellers are really itching to get to Rio and are searching for flights wherever they go. These countries had the highest percentage of flight searches to Rio performed on mobile versus desktop devices for an August departure.

1st place: Japan

2nd place: Hong Kong

3rd place: Korea


Family: Most likely to bring the team

Everything’s better when the family is together, at least that’s what these three countries seem to believe. They had the highest percentage of flight searches for three or more travellers to Rio during August.

1st place: Austria

2nd place: Hong Kong

3rd place: Italy



Luxury: First-class loungers

Sometimes, travellers long to enjoy the finer things in life. Korean travellers showed the highest percentage of searches for first-class only flights to Rio during August, closely followed by the Swiss and Americans in second and third places, respectively.

3rd place: USA



Super-Fan-Status: Showing up at the games is a must

All nations competing to prove that they are the most hardcore supporters heading to Rio have clearly been outranked by South American countries, who have taken the entire ‘Super-Fan’ podium. Travellers from the host country, Brazil, have conducted the highest number of searches for flights to Rio during the month of August, followed by Argentina and Colombia in second and third place respectively.
