Hong Kong Welcomes Additional Capacity Out of Australia

Hong Kong is seeing uplift in flight services out of Australia following the announcement today that Virgin Australia will launch non-stop services, five days a week from Melbourne to Hong Kong, starting 5 July 2017.

Capacity out of Melbourne, in particular, will experience a significant increase, with Cathay Pacific having launched its A350 on the route in early February and planning a second A350 from Melbourne in late October.

‘We are delighted to have two of Australia’s key carriers, Virgin Australia and Qantas, flying into Hong Kong, along with Hong Kong’s flagship carrier Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines.  A fourth major airline is a huge boost for the region and we hope to see positive arrival results off the back of it’, said Hong Kong Tourism Board Regional Director, Andrew Clark.

Virgin Australia’s network through their alliance with China’s HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express will improve connections through to mainland China and build on Cathay Pacific’s existing network across Asia, the Americas and UK/Europe.

‘Virgin Australia’s launch is incredibly significant for Hong Kong as interest and capacity to China increases.  Hong Kong is still a major player on the stopover route and an ideal stepping stone into China, particularly for first time travellers.’

In 2016, Hong Kong welcomed the successful launch of Hong Kong Airlines out of the Gold Coast, via Cairns to Hong Kong in February and the introduction of double daily flights from Qantas between April and October last year.

The momentum continues later this year as Cathay Pacific plans to introduce an A350 out of Brisbane at the end of March and ex Perth in late October.
