Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, Japanese hospitality company Fujita Kanko’s one-of-a-kind five-star flagship property, will begin its annual firefly festival on May 20th, with special events, accommodation and dining plans.

Fireflies, honored in Japanese culture for over a thousand years as a symbol of summer and intriguing beauty, have nonetheless become an extremely rare sight in modern Tokyo. However, from late May to the end of June each summer, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo’s Japanese botanical garden, a massive green oasis in the middle of Tokyo, becomes home to thousands of fireflies. Their magical beauty has been enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike since 1954 when Chinzanso began hosting firefly viewings.

Accommodation Package: Aqua Garden Hotaru Stay (available until June 12th)

Newly added in November 2015, the spacious Aqua Garden Room includes a separate bedroom and living room with an aqua terrarium that has miniatures of a three-story pagoda, waterfall, bridge and sacred tree, representing the Chinzanso garden. The package includes a private firefly viewing from 11:00-11:30 pm, firefly-inspired cocktails at the main bar, spa access and 1:00 pm late check-out. Rates start at 53,200 yen/night with breakfast. Reservations: call +81-3-3943-0996 (9:00 am–8:00 pm Japan time)

Dining: Firefly Evening Dinner Buffet (7:00-9:00 pm, until June 30th)

Enjoy appetizers reminiscent of fireflies and signature dishes such as roast beef, abalone bowl and other delicacies. The buffet includes Japanese and western cuisines, desserts and various drinks.

  • Price: 9,800 yen/person on weekdays; 10,500 yen on Fridays and weekends
  • Special prices apply to children under 12

Special seasonal menus at seven of the hotel’s restaurants will also debut. The spa will offer a couple’s treatment inspired by fireflies.
