Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, Japanese hospitality company Fujita Kanko’s iconic five-star flagship property, will offer special accommodation and dining plans to celebrate the summer firefly season from May 20th through June 30th.
Each year, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo’s lush botanical garden welcomes thousands of twinkling fireflies from late May to early July. Fireflies are an extremely rare sight in Tokyo. Locals and tourists alike have come to the majestic garden at Chinzanso to enjoy the magical sight of dancing fireflies since 1954 when Fujita Kanko began hosting firefly viewings. Fireflies have been honored in Japanese culture for over a thousand years as a symbol of the beauty of summer.
Firefly cultivation is a ritual practiced by the hotel year-round. Each summer after fireflies lay eggs, the hotel saves them in an incubator. In January, the larvae are returned to the garden’s creek, where they were laid. Local children are invited to help release larvae in the creek and to return to see the sparkling fireflies in the summer.
