Along with the arrival of inclement November weather in much of the North American continent, come thoughts of holiday escapes to the warm sun of Yucatan, Mexico.

Wellness Center Pavilion Hotel XiximThis year, Hotel Xixim, a unique Mayan bungalow resort just one hour west of Merida, complete with a new wellness center, is hosting vacation options ranging from wellness and yoga retreats, to cooking classes, to nature tours. In addition, special family rates during U.S. Thanksgiving week offer a chance to view flocks of thousands of pink flamingos in their seasonal return to the Celestun Biosphere Reserve estuary near the hotel.

From November 15-17, Hotel Xixim offers a workshop called “Saborearte” – a Mayan cooking class with demonstrations and recipes featuring natural, traditional Mayan cuisine. The three-day workshop package includes all meals, a local tour, non-alcoholic beverages, round trip transfers from Merida to the hotel, the cooking classes, a recipe book, and more. Priced at $530 per person double occupancy, reservations can be made until October 31 at info(at)hotelxixim(dot)com.

Various packages provide options for yoga practitioners as well as non-practicing family members. Reservations must be made prior to October 31; yoga retreat information and prices are available on the AMYI blog.

For those interested in a healthy U.S. Thanksgiving week escape, the Raw Food Detox Retreat with Ani Phyo from November 24 to December 1 offers three dates and price choices including 3, 4, or 7 night stays at Hotel Xixim. Besides Mayan bungalow accommodations, this Mexico wellness retreat includes all organic meals, a healthy detox program, energy boosting and fat-melting demonstrations and recipes, taxes, tips, a flamingo-viewing tour, and round trip Merida-Hotel Xixim transfers. Hotel Xixim, a leader in Mexico ecotourism, is located on the beach in western Yucatan’s 146,000-acre Celestun Biosphere Reserve. The reserve is the main feeding and mating area of the American pink flamingo in Yucatan, Mexico. It is also the protected home to over 300 species of birds (13 endemic) and a variety of subtropical mammals — coati, jaguar, paca, monkeys and others. Families with kids can take advantage of U.S. Thanksgiving holiday rates to safely explore the reserve by boat, bicycle, kayak, or interpretive nature trails. A discounted family rate (November 27 – December 1) for 2 adults and 2 children age 12 or under, is $107 USD per adult, per night in an ocean view individual Mayan bungalow. Two children up to age 12 are free. Included are daily full American breakfasts, early check in and late check out, and all taxes. “A la carte” eco adventure tours from the hotel offer viewing flamingos in the wild, exploring for crocodiles by moonlight, and expert-guided bird watching tours.
