Hong Kong, 13 May, 2014 According to the latest Hotels.comTM Club Sandwich Index (CSI), the top 2 most expensive cities to buy a hotel club sandwich globally were Geneva, Switzerland (HKD253); Paris, France (HKD228); followed by Helsinki which knocked Oslo out of the top three with HKD189 following an 11% increase on the 2013 average cost in the Finnish capital.

Hong Kong (HKD165) jumped two places to 8th in the world regarding average price of a club sandwich set at a hotel. In Hong Kong, prices for the humble ‘Club’ ranged from an extraordinary HKD228 in one five-star hotel to a more reasonable HKD70 in a three-star establishment.

Similar to last year, Tokyo remained in the number one spot in Asia Pacific for the most expensive club sandwich in a hotel. The average club sandwich prices of the Asian cities dropped as the major currencies across the region slipped. The price for a club sandwich in Hong Kong decreased from HKD169 to HKD165.

Among the Asian cities surveyed, Hong Kong had higher hotel club sandwich prices than Seoul (HKD157), Singapore (HKD119), Beijing (HKD105) and Taipei (HKD96). Hong Kong’s average club sandwich prices even surpassed those in New York (HKD139), a city many consider to be one of the most moeny-loving in the world.

The CSI average price was calculated from the real prices paid by guests for a Club Sandwich in 30 hotels in either the capital or an important tourist city in the 28 countries surveyed, across five, four and three star categories.  In total, 840 hotels globally were canvassed.

Using the classic hotel staple of a chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayonnaise sandwich as a barometer of affordability, the Club Sandwich Index (CSI) offers holidaymakers an indication of the costs associated with their destination of choice.

Now in its third year, the Index reflects not only changes in the actual price of a Club Sandwich across the globe but also the effect of currency fluctuations.  Travellers will be pleased to note that generally prices are falling: the Geneva average of HKD253, although higher than any other destination, was lower than last year’s (HKD259). Globally, the average cost of a Club Sandwich decreased 7% from HKD150 in 2013 to HKD140 in 2014, a further drop from 2012 (HKD152).

India’s New Delhi remained the cheapest destination for a Club Sandwich, with an average of just HKD68, although several other holiday favourites also appeared under the HKD130 threshold, including Madrid (HKD123), Rio de Janeiro (HKD113) and Bangkok (HKD93). Meanwhile, Sydney experienced the greatest decrease in its Club Sandwich price, falling 33% from HKD175 in 2013 to HKD131 in 2014.

Alison Couper of the brand remarks, “The Club Sandwich Index offers travellers a simple price comparison to show how far their money may stretch in each country, using the most common item on any hotel menu. The majority of countries continued to display a decline in the price of a Club Sandwich, which is great news for travellers who are likely to get more for their money abroad. The next time you’re tucking into a Club in Geneva, remember you could have three more for your money in New Delhi!”
