Montrealers need no excuse to party, and with 375 candles to blow out, visitors to the ultra-chic city of Montreal are invited to join in the year-long revelries.

Here’s your cheat sheet of the coolest anniversary events and iconic experiences in the second largest French-speaking city in the world.

  1. Witness the incredible Jacques Cartier Bridge Illumination – a spectacular light show being launched to coincide with the city’s birthdate of 17 May.
  2. Pay tribute to a legend: The Museum of Contemporary Art will celebrate one of the city’s most iconic figures, Leonard Cohen, with a comprehensive exhibit, launching 9 November 2017.
  3. Throughout summer, Sherbrooke Street will be transformed into an outdoor museum, with more than 60 works on display, delivering messages of peace and tolerance.
  4. Stroll the cobblestoned streets of Old Montreal, marvel at the Gothic-Revival architecture of the Notre Dame Basilica, and shop for antiques and local art on Saint Paul Street.
  5. Let your taste-buds do the walking: Sample iconic dishes, such as poutine, and smoked meats, nibble on a hot bagel and lose yourself in the Jean-Talon Markets, a Montreal institution. Try a Montreal Food Tours for an insider’s guide to the flavours of each neighbourhood.
  1. Join two million music fans from around the world at the largest jazz festival on the planet. The annual Festival International de Jazz showcases more than 3000 musicians with hundreds of free concerts throughout multiple indoor and outdoor venues.
  2. Take a walk along Saint-Laurent Boulevard and bear witness to the emotive murals adorning the walls, revealing the history and culture of Montreal’s multicultural neighbourhoods.
  3. Visiting during winter? Spend the weekend in a bona fide sugar shack at Sucrerie de la Montagne in Rigaud, a short train ride from the city centre. Learn the art of maple ‘tapping’, indulge in a delicious sugaring-off feast and spend the night in an idyllic log cabin in the heart of a maple forest. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel!
