More than 600 international aviation security professionals will meet in Montreal this week to advance the cultivation of a new mind-set towards aviation security, one that embraces Aviation Security (AVSEC) as a culture beyond a set of standards.

Airports Council International (ACI) World has worked in close collaboration with the International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO) on the symposium, taking place this week, from 12–14 September 2017, in Montreal, Canada. This partnership builds on the solid foundation of ACI-ICAO initiatives related to aviation security and on the sustainable development of the industry.

David P. Pekoske will make his first international appearance as the new Administrator for the United State’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and will serve as the Keynote speaker for the opening session. Other keynote addresses include:

  • Henrik Hololei, Director General, Mobility and Transport, European Commission
  • Philippe Rainville, President and Chief Executive Officer, Aéroports de Montréal, Canada

Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World, will open the session on “Security processes and technological innovations,” which will feature airport experts from around the world including:

  • Erick Bouraï, Head, Aviation Security Policy, Groupe ADP, Paris, France
  • Suresh Khadakbhavi, Deputy General Manager, Innovation Lab, Bangalore International Airport, India
  • Bart Mos, Senior Security Officer, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
  • Buti Qurwash, Vice President, Security, Dubai Airports, United Arab Emirates
  • Jennifer Sullivan, Director, Corporate Safety and Security, Greater Toronto Airports Authority
  • Declan Troy, Manager, Security, Dublin Airport

To complement the interactive nature of the Symposium, the exhibition showcases the latest State and industry AVSEC technology and process innovations, along with dynamic learning workshops. Some of the exhibitors and sponsors include: Battelle; Face4Systems; Fiscan; L3 Security and Detection Systems; Nuchtech; and, Rapiscan Systems.

“We are all part of a society that has seen the continued evolution of threats to security,” said Gittens. “Airports are part of the solution as society confronts this evolving threat to day-to-day life. As well, with growing passenger numbers and limited space, we cannot keep creating more processing layers and longer queues. We need to find ways of being smarter about security. There is no one solution for all airports—rather, airports and aviation stakeholders must work together to ensure that integrated solutions are in line with regulatory requirements, and the needs, facilities and risk profile of the airport. AVSEC2017 will provide an opportunity for industry experts to elaborate on best practices and new technologies which can lead to global improvements.”
