Inferno engulfs London tourist landmark

About 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines have managed to bring under control a huge fire that ripped through a building in London’s famous Camden Lock Market and threatened to spread beyond.

Emergency services were called in the middle of the night, London time, after fire broke out near the Camden Stables.

The area, known for shopping, entertainment and nightlife (its live music venues include Dingwalls), is popular with Australian visitors. It receives about 28 million visitors a year, many of them international tourists.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph noted that it was the second time in recent years that the north London market has been hit by a large conflagration. The Camden Canal Market was destroyed by a major blaze in February 2008. It gutted several local landmarks (including the iconic Hawley Arms pub, known for its showbiz crowd) and put the waterside market out of action for 15 months.

A spokeswoman for Market Tech, the major shareholder in Camden Lock Market, said fire crews managed to contain the blaze within one building and no-one was injured.

“While a small section of Camden Lock Market will be closed off to the public until further notice as a precaution, the rest of Camden Lock Market and the wider area, including Stables Market and Union Street, will be fully open and operating and welcoming visitors and customers as usual.”

London is still in shock after the Grenfell Tower fire last month, in which a 67-metre-high block of public housing flats in North Kensington, West London, was consumed by an inferno that killed at least 80 people and injured 70. The final death toll is unlikely to be known until next year.
