Instagram shows passengers’ ingenious deadly weapons

egtmedia59As American travellers attempt to take ever-increasing numbers of firearms and dangerous weapons aboard flights, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has turned to Instagram to publish a selection of items that passengers try to bring through security checkpoints.

A picture is sometimes said to be worth a thousand words, and this is a case in point. TSA 1

Instagram, the online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service, is the latest craze on the social media front.

The TSA’s Instagram page is: http://instagram.com/tsablogteam/#

Pictures show a bewildering variety of weapons: bayonets and TSA 2throwing knives; a hand grenade (inert, it was discovered); a stun gun disguised as a packet of Marlboro cigarettes; a loaded Ruger automatic pistol; a switchblade knife disguised as a toy gun (there’s creativity for you); a knife concealed in a belt buckle; Derringer miniature pocket pistols (just 10cm long but deadly); ultra-thin knives concealed in credit cards. TSA 3

Some Americans genuinely forget they are carrying a loaded pistol in their handbag, a dagger in their boot or a knuckleduster in their pocket when they head for the airport. Most passengers caught with such stuff say they just forgot it was there.

In the first six months of this year, the TSA seized 894 guns from passengers, which was 30% more than a year before. From 2011 to 2012, the number of firearms seized grew by 17%.
