InterContinental Bali Resort Pledges Seafood Traceability
Sustainable seafood sourcing is not just about how, and how many, fish are caught, it is also about how seafood is traded. The development of a sustainable seafood industry requires more than sustainable fishing. It is also about addressing the entire ‘chain of custody’ – from the ocean all the way to the consumers’ plates. Improving this ‘traceability’ is critical to promoting sustainability in both aquaculture and wild-caught fish: The current, largely opaque supply chain hides numerous negative impacts, including overfishing, fraud, human rights abuses in the labour force, pollution, and resource depletion. Traceability enables corporate buyers and consumers to support businesses that are socially and environmentally responsible and to avoid creating market incentives for bad practices.
InterContinental Bali Resort is proud to be supporting the traceability strategy through its commitment to making informed choices about the authenticity, quality and sustainability of the seafood it purchases, while also supporting ways in which to make the seafood business more transparent and reward those who responsibly harvest and handle the catch.
The WWF Responsible Seafood Campaign 2015 was conceived to encourage safe seafood consumption by promoting consumer-facing brands that are carrying out seafood traceability and implementing responsible seafood purchases. In this respect, WWF-Indonesia invited a number of Indonesia based retail and food businesses, restaurants, hotels, and seafood services to participate in the ‘WWF Pledge for Seafood Traceability’ in order to determine the supply chain from which their products were sourced. This included details such as the fishing location and seafood origins, the fishing gear, the aquaculture method that was used, or the catching practices, the fishing duration, the harvest time, and the product handling.
InterContinental Bali Resort was successful in obtaining a wide variety of information about the seafood supply chain from which it sources its seafood products, making it the proud recipient of the ‘WWF Champion of Seafood Traceability’ award.
