Leading luxury hotel InterContinental Kuala Lumpur recently took to the tracks and roads of the city in running and cycling activities as part of a global initiative to clock up the kilometres and raise funds for InterContinental Hotel Group’s (IHG) Race Around the World.

The two activities saw 72 hotel colleagues jogged at the beautifully landscaped KLCC Park on September 26, completing 514 kilometres while another team of 20 colleagues huffed and puffed their way around the city in conjunction with KL by Cycle, who sponsored the bicycles, on September 28, covering 100 kilometres.

Every kilometre achieved, be it ran or biked, resulted in USD one dollar donation to the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme, a fund devoted to addressing issues brought about by natural disaster. The total of 614 kilometres clocked up meant hotel colleagues raised USD614 (approximately RM1,964) to contribute to a fund targeted to reach a total of USD300, 000 from the coordinated global activity conducted by hotels in the IHG hospitality group in Mission-accomplished!-100-kilometres-of-walking-and-cycling-around-Kuala-Lumpur-for-the-IHG-Race-Around-the-World-300x169over 100 countries and territories.

InterContinental Kuala Lumpur General Manager, Phil Riley who led the team of 92 colleagues in the races said that he was delighted with the turnout and success of the event.

“Taking part in IHG Race Around the World was a great experience for everyone involved. Not only did the activities give the team the chance to really connect with the culture of Kuala Lumpur, it was rewarding to know that with every turn of the pedal or step of the way, more money would be going to those that need it most,” said Riley.

While the KLCC Park run was around the 50-acre tropical landscape that is home to approximately 1,900 indigenous trees and palms, the three-hourDedicated-to-support-the-campaign,-for-every-1-kilometre,-$1-USD-will-be-donated-to-the-IHG-Shelter-in-a-Storm-Programme-300x168 cycling route included sight-seeing stops at the old colonial era buildings located within the historical Dataran Merdeka and the rich flora and fauna in the serene gardens and parks of the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park, the city’s oldest park.

“Organising this cycling event alongside KL By Cycle allowed our colleagues to enhance their insider knowledge of the city where they can then share with guests. This is part of the InterContinental’s worldwide “In the Know” promise to have our guests explore the latest discoveries and enjoy a local, authentic and enriching travel experiences when they are with us in Kuala Lumpur,” said Riley.

All proceeds of IHG Race Around the World goes towards the IHG Shelter Fund; a pool of resources built up by fundraising activities throughout the year that allows IHG to response effectively during natural disasters and crises effecting IHG branded hotels, their employees and the local community.
