International Moving Checklist

December 5, 2018 Lifestyle No Comments Email Email

Moving overseas can be a stressful process, which is why you need to do everything possible to make it easy. Being prepared will help you stay calm on the big day and will ensure that you stay on top of everything. Use this checklist to keep on track throughout the final weeks of your move, so you know exactly what you need to be doing and when you need to be doing it.

6-8 weeks before moving day

This is the time to get organised and start planning your move. Make a list of everything that needs to be done and make sure you stay on top of it!

  • Get an accurate quote from your removalists
  • Arrange any travel and accommodation you need
  • Organise moving insurance for your belongings
  • Find secure storage facilities if you need to store you goods for a while
  • Check any quarantine requirements for your travel
  • Ensure that your passports are up-to-date, or organise to get passports
  • If you have pets, check any pet requirements for travelling overseas
  • Work out if you need a new driver’s licence in your destination country

1-2 weeks before moving day

As you approach the moving date, your workload will start to become a lot bigger. You need to pack, if you aren’t getting your removalists to do it, ensure everything is organised, and keep on top of all the other paperwork involved in moving overseas.

  • Organise utility connection for your new home
  • Purchase an international sim card for your phone
  • Get some local currency for your destination
  • Check that all your taxes are paid and up-to-date
  • Get any vaccinations and inoculations that you need
  • Let your bank know that you are moving and arrange a new bank if they don’t provide services at your destination
  • Pay any outstanding bills you have

1 day before moving day

The day before the move you need to make sure everything is ready for the big day. Finalise your packing and make sure everything clean and organised.

  • Remove all the rubbish from your property
  • Defrost your fridges and freezers and dry them out
  • Make sure all the packing is done
  • Check into your flights if possible
  • Keep your valuables and important documents on you
  • If your car is being transported, make sure it is empty and ready for collection

Moving day

When moving day arrives, make sure you’re up early after a good night’s sleep and ready to get going. To make sure your move is as efficient as possible, ensure your boxes are labelled and packed up as close to the front door as possible, so you don’t have to trek around your entire house all day.

  • Get your home cleaned professionally
  • Make sure you turn off all electrical switches and taps
  • Lock up the entire house
  • Check you haven’t left anything behind or forgotten anything important

Hopefully this checklist will allow you to stay organised throughout your entire move, so nothing is forgotten and you aren’t panicking come moving day. Moving overseas can be overwhelming, but with the right removalists and organisational skills, your next move could be a breeze!
