A woman has been arrested after casually smoking a cigarette on a flight from Bali to Melbourne – but things got hotter on another flight, when a mobile phone burst into flame, a passenger dropped it under someone’s seat and cabin crew ran to put it out with extinguishers.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is investigating an incident on a Jetstar flight, in which a woman apparently lit a cigarette and smoked it in her seat on a flight from Bali to Melbourne.
Passengers on flight JQ44 smelled smoke and alerted flight crew. After the flight touched down, passengers were asked to remain seated while police boarded and escorted the sobbing woman off the plane.
Things got hotter on an Alaska Airlines flight to Hawaii, when a passenger’s phone spontaneously ignited and burst into flame.
A college student told KOMO-TV in Seattle she was watching a movie when flames began shooting out of her iPhone 6.
“All of the sudden there was like eight-inch flames coming out of my phone,” the 18 year old told the channel. “And I flipped it off onto the ground and it got under someone’s seat, and the flames were just getting higher and a bunch of people stood up.”
An Alaska Air spokesman told ABC News, “The fire was quickly extinguished by our flight attendants, who are trained for situations like these.”
The airline and the US Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. Apple is reportedly investigating too.
