Air New Zealand has a hard-won reputation for producing some of the world’s most watchable and most amusing in-flight safety videos – and its latest may be the best ever.
The airline has teamed up with Hollywood actress Anna Faris and New Zealand comedy actor Rhys Darby for its latest safety video, Safety in Hollywood. Fans of the television series Flight of the Conchords may remember Darby as Murray, the band’s manager.
Safety in Hollywood was viewed more than 1.5 million times in the first 24 hours after it premiered to audiences globally, and numbers continue to climb.
The video is funny and at times almost surreal – but it gets the safety message across. The message is always conveyed more effectively when passengers actually want to watch the video – as in this case.

As well as being a hit online, the video has been featured in global news media outlets including Mashable, CNN and the Daily Mail.
The video, filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles, shows the Fari and Darby exploring a variety of Hollywood genres as Darby tries to convince Faris to star in an Air New Zealand safety video.
Air New Zealand head of global brand Jodi Williams says the Hollywood theme was a fitting choice for the airline which flies to Los Angeles twice daily.
“Our Auckland to LA non-stop service is extremely popular so it was great to bring some of the Hollywood glamour along with some humour to our latest inflight safety video. It’s amazing to see people the world over getting to know the Air New Zealand brand though this platform which has proven extremely popular around the world, both online and on board our services.
“It’s also been fantastic to partner again with Warner Bros which helped to produce our Hobbit-inspired inflight safety videos and to work with the talented Rhys and Anna,” Williams said.
Safety in Hollywood was filmed at four different sets at Warner Bros. including locations seen in legendary movies such as Jurassic Park, Casablanca, War of the Worlds and the TV series True Blood. More than 20 extras were also involved, including Chester the Chihuahua, who has appeared in Transformers and Grey’s Anatomy.
Collectively, Air New Zealand’s safety videos have been viewed online more than 84 million times.
