Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) is pleased to host two special international productions in Istanbul in September: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Sadler’s Wells London’s dance spectacle Sutra and Compagnia Baccalà’s timeless performance Pss Pss will meet the audience within the scope of İKSV’s special events programme.

Sutra will be realised with the collaboration of Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and Zorlu Performing Arts Centre on 16 and 17 September at 20.30 at Zorlu PSM Turkcell Stage. Pss Pss will be performed on Saturday, 28 September at 20.00 and Sunday, 29 September at 15.00 at Caddebostan Kültür Merkezi; and on Monday, 30 September and Tuesday, 1 October at 20.00 at Hisar Okulları Kültür Merkezi with the collaboration of the Kadıköy Municipality and Hisar Schools.

Sutra

Celebrating its 10th anniversary last season, Sutra has so far reached over 190,000 viewers in 64 cities across 32 countries. Hailed by The Times for ‘exceeding out even highest expectations’ and by The Guardian as a ‘profoundly imagined show taking the concept of cultural exchange to a whole new level’, Sutra deeply moved the audiences at the Istanbul Theatre Festival in 2010 and received standing ovations.

The award-winning collaboration between choreographer Cherkaoui, sculptor Antony Gormley, and 19 Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China offers a breath-taking experience in which dance meets with tradition and spirit with physical discipline. The word ‘sutra’ refers to a Buddhist scripture and this incomparable work of athleticism explores the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition and its relationship with kung fu within a contemporary context. With Antony Gormley’s striking set of 21 wooden boxes and Polish composer Szymon Brzóska’s specially commissioned score for piano, percussions, and strings performed live, it captures the hearts and imaginations of people.

Pss Pss

Compagnia Baccalà, the duo that has performed over 700 shows in 50 countries and received, will be visiting the city once again with Pss Pss. Having received numerous awards around the world including the Cirque du Soleil Award, Pss Pss received standing ovations at the 22nd Istanbul Theatre Festival last year.

Founded by the immensely warm, sincere and productive duo Camilla Pessi and Simone Fassari, Compagnia Baccalà’s Pss Pss invites the audience into a different and yet so familiar world with a brilliantly constructed sense of humour and masterful physical narration. In a world where verbosity renders communication and understanding one another more difficult with each passing day, Pss Pss embraces audiences of all ages with a feeling of confidence emerging from silent understanding. The play is a fresh, original and rare performance which blends the aesthetics of the silent film era with theatre, circus acts and clown while bearing traces of the style and manner of the greatest artists of the period, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
