egtmedia59A notification on its website on Tuesday morning, in Thai and Japanese, says the waiver will apply to short-term visitors staying up to 15 days. Those planning to stay longer or visiting Japan for business or other purposes still have to apply for a visa.

Under the new rules, Thai visitors must have an onward booking, and cash or a credit card to take care of expenses while in the country.

Anyone previously caught and expelled from Japan for overstay will not be eligible for the new visa waiver.

Immigration officers can also ask about the purpose of the visit and may request to see relevant documents such as return tickets or other documents, the announcement says.
