Japan’s Glory At The Grand Hotel Principe Di Piemonte With The Original Tea Ceremony

The Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte, based in Viareggio (LU), hosted last Saturday the Tea ceremony according to the traditional Japanese rite and dressing code, in the historic Butterfly room.

The event was held under the auspices of the Associazione culturale Ville Borbone e Dimore Storiche della Versilia (Cultural Association of Versilia’s Borbone Villas and Historic Dwellings), which the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte joined a few months ago, and it involved a hundred guests – the maximum expected to match the room capacity with the utmost of participants this type of ceremony may tolerate – coming from all over Tuscany: not only Viareggio but also Lucca, Livorno, Montecatini and Florence itself.

Among the guests, we point out the presence of two noble families.

Ceremony’s Master was Letizia Del Magro, mezzosoprano, who has been studying the art of tea ceremony for eleven years, having obtained numerous specialist diplomas in Japan. She was assisted by three Japanese guests in kimono.

The costumes were original and the utensils precious, so as to unleash all the magic atmosphere of the Far East. After the ceremony, the Master answered all the questions of the guests and she ended up offering everyone a dose of Japanese matcha tea, plus a sweet treat.

«Tea Ceremony isn’t just about art or culture», says the teacher. «Though ancient, it applies to everyday life and it lets us live according to the four basic principles of the school: purity, harmony, respect and tranquillity. The gestures are very many because the complete ceremony would last up to five hours. By learning the technique we begin understanding the meanings and the motivations underlying every gesture, thus getting how to apply these values to the daily gestures of life».

On March 10, the inauguration of a new Tea Ceremony school will take place in Lucca.
