Jehovah’s Witness conference boosts demand for greater Melbourne and regional Victoria hotels

Australia’s largest hotel operator, Accor has reported soaring demand in hotel occupancies across Melbourne with overflows to regional properties as some 70,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses flock to the city for a three-day convention held at Etihad Stadium (17-19 October).

“Although the Jehovah’s Witnesses conference starts from Friday, Melbourne is already full this week with the demand for rooms starting to spill over into regional hotels, says Accor’s Vice President for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, Adrian Williams.

“All our Melbourne CBD hotels are full and we are experiencing strong demand into our suburban hotels with bookings reaching out into the region as far as Geelong and Creswick. Inbound groups are now booking these regional hotels as they seek availability away from the city during this period. The majority of our hotels are full pre and post-convention as visitors look to experience the cultural capital of Australia and surroundings.

“It is the biggest event for the year of its kind in Melbourne, which is a welcome addition for the October weeks in between the AFL Grand Final and Spring Racing Carnival. This event also coincides with the National Gallery of Victoria’s opening of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gautier exhibition ‘From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ so fashionistas and church delegates are going head to head for hotel beds, seats on planes, trains, buses and trams.

“We congratulate the Victorian State government for their continued focus on securing major events and growing regional tourism. This convention highlights that the most productive way to receive growth in regional areas is to have strong demand for hotels in the city. The event approach is the best way of achieving this.”
