JETSTAR BANKS ON DELAY CHOICE calls on Jetstar to stop preselecting optional extras on bookings immediately

Consumer group CHOICE is calling on Jetstar to immediately end its policy of forcing consumers to opt out of pricey pre-ticked extras when they’re purchasing a flight online.“Jetstar’s decision to delay the removal of the tick box tax until July 2017 is unacceptable,” says CHOICE Head of Media Tom Godfrey.

“Given Jetstar has already removed the tax in New Zealand and Virgin and Tiger have done the right thing in Australia, the airline’s seven month delay is bad news for its customers.

“Jetstar is the worst offender when it comes to tricking consumers into paying for things they don’t need when booking flights, we think they should ditch the ticks straight away.unnamed-14

“Pre-ticked optional extras can see travellers paying up to 40 per cent more for things they don’t want, when all they’re trying to do is book a flight.

“If a company needs to use sneaky tactics to trick their customers into purchasing optional extras they may not want or need, it’s time they rethink their business model.”

Following discussions with the ACCC, Jetstar decided to delay the end of its practice of preselecting extras until July 1, 2017 even though Virgin and Tiger have called an immediate end to the dodgy practice.

“While CHOICE welcomes the ACCC’s role in ending the practice, the seven month delay is completely unacceptable,” Mr Godfrey says.

CHOICE has been campaigning for an end to pre-ticked optional extras on the online booking pages of Australia’s four major domestic airlines.

A CHOICE investigation found preselected extras increased the price of a flight by up to 40%[2]as three of Australia’s four major domestic airlines added in extras such as standard seating, travel insurance and even charity donations.
